Callao

Callao at the mouth of the Rimac in the Pacific Ocean, the third largest peruvian city after Lima and Arequipa, is the most important gateway to Peru with the largest port and the international airport. Ever since it was founded as the «Port of Lima», its function as the most important peruvian port has been decisive for the development of the city. The imposing Real Felipe Fortress was built to protect the residents from frequent pirate raids. Closely linked to Lima, however, Callao is an independent city from an administrative point of view.
